    Canada’s National Observer is seeking a talented Managing Producer to join our team and to build and lead CNO’s video, podcasting and live/online events into a unit recognized for creating excellent and important content.

    In this new leadership role of Managing Producer of video and podcast productions at CNO, you’ll report to executive editor Karyn Pugliese. Your focus will be to follow up on the success of CNO’s first podcast series, the award- nominated Race Against Climate Change and to create and manage a regular line up of CNO podcasting and video productions to stream throughout fall and winter 2022-23.

    In this role, you’ll develop a creative vision for CNO audio/video productions and oversee and participate in content production and development for CNO podcasts, videos and live/ live online events. You’ll rely on your journalistic background and vast knowledge of the Canadian political landscape and environmental and human rights reporting to develop themes, shape story arcs and pinpoint potential guests.

    You’ll recruit, hire, and manage the audio/video production team, including an Associate Producer and contractors for videography, editing etc. You’ll also manage operational, budgetary, and financial activities of CNO’s audio/video production unit.

    You and your team will oversee every detail of production from concept through to the final cuts, mix and distribution. Your leadership role in the company will be to establish CNO as a production incubator where impactful and award-winning podcasts and videos that drive engagement are made.

    Salary and benefits

    • $82,000 annual salary

    Job responsibilities

    • Develop the creative vision for all CNO’s audio/visual and live/ online events
    • Hire and manage CNO audio/video productions personnel, including employees and contractors
    • Manage CNO audio/video department including operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities
    • Plan and implement systems and practices to perform the work and fulfill the mission and the goals of the department
    • Initiate fundraising activities and seek sponsorship and partnership opportunities
    • Establish and maintain relevant data analysis and feedback systems to monitor the operation of the department
    • Communicate regularly with the CEO, Executive Editor and other contacts within the organization
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned

    Job qualifications

    • Post-secondary degree or diploma in journalism, broadcasting or other relevant field
    • Minimum five years experience working for major news outlets in broadcast and developing/producing video/audio stories
    • Knowledgeable and experienced in all technical aspects of video and podcasting production
    • Knowledgeable in the creation and use of spreadsheets for budgeting, invoicing and reporting
    • Knowledgeable in using data analysis for decision-making purposes
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Experience hiring and managing staff and production crews
