The Atlantic is looking for a Senior Photo Editor to join the newsroom. This role will primarily focus on photography for the print magazine, and provide support as needed on digital projects. The ideal candidate will be highly creative and a driven problem-solver with sound journalistic judgment and superb aesthetic taste. This candidate should have extensive research and assigning capabilities for photography in all genres, excellent communication skills, and deep industry knowledge.

The primary responsibilities will be to research, conceptualize, art direct, and commission or license photography for the print magazine (as well as all other platforms it will appear on), and to manage workflow and other photo logistics, including collaborating with the design and production teams on the translation of print photography to the website. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding and appreciation for photography and photojournalism. They should have a wide range of knowledge about photography and visual storytelling and be able to identify a diverse array of photographers globally to contribute to The Atlantic. They should be a clear communicator and team player, being highly collaborative while also able to independently oversee assignments from ideation through to completion. They should be detail oriented to ensure assignments meet our editorial standards on our timelines. The senior photo editor will report to the Director of Photography and work closely with the entire art department and the larger newsroom.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience working in a magazine photo department
• A deep understanding of conceptualizing, commissioning, art directing, and producing photoshoots; and of the legal issues related to publication of photography, including strong knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues
• Close attention to detail and the ability to multitask
• A highly creative problem solver with strong collaborative skills and a solid understanding of relationships between the different departments of a magazine
• Ability to work under fast-paced deadlines
