    The Seattle Times Company is seeking a PacificNW Magazine Editor to shape the editorial direction of the magazine. The PacificNW Magazine Editor creates a mix of stories every week that reach readers where they live: in the Pacific Northwest – at home, in the kitchen, in the garden, at work , at play. Responsible for planning, evaluating and editing materials for Pacific Northwest Magazine in print and online, plus supervising staff and production. Must display a sense of design and sophisticated photojournalism, with attention to fine detail.  Troubleshoots problems during production, edits for style and proofs final products.

    Works with technical and digital leadership teams to form a strategy for multiplatform presentation of the magazine. Helps define and support a progressive vision for the visual presence of the Seattle Times online. Represents the magazine publicly and interacts with readers in a variety of ways in the digital setting.

    Major Functions:

    • Finds and cultivates fresh narrative voices, both on staff and freelance. 
    • Generates and keeps all story budgets up to date.
    • Acts as a liaison between copy editor, art director, producer, other news departments, advertising, marketing, color camera and the offsite printer.
    • Coordinates communication among editors, writers, photographers and producers.
    • Supervises all writing by staff and freelancers.
    • Creates and adheres to annual expense budgets.
    • Uses web analytics and social media (including Facebook and Pinterest) to enhance and promote the magazine, with enough digital savvy to anticipate new technological opportunities as they emerge.
    • Has a strong understanding of web metrics that measure readership and engagement.
    • Takes the lead on delivering the magazine into a multi-platform future, collaborating with our business teams, including audience research.
    •  Has an ability to unify technical, journalistic and reader-oriented initiatives and motivate all team members to innovate.
    • Generates and refines story ideas that are local, textured and unique. Displays a keen faculty and ear for language in both writing and editing. 
    • Each story should have a well-executed style, point of view and voice or tone.
    •  Cultivates the use of literary devices, blending facts and data with impression, character and intuition to achieve multi-dimensional magazine stories.
    • Plans regular lifestyle and sense-of-place features, not only involving detailed knowledge of subject, but coordinating photography, as well.
    • Participates in the selection of employees. 
    • Represents the magazine at public events and in the digital sphere.
    • Uses judgment to read portfolios and interview candidates. 
    • Conducts annual performance reviews.
