Job ID:2014-41126 Reporting to the Vice President and General Manager, This role is responsible for overall supervision and management of the News Department and for developing and executing strategies designed to make the station's news product the audience leader in the market. Founded in 1948 and owned by Tribune Broadcasting, a division of the Tribune Company, WPIX-TV(PIX11) has long been regarded as a groundbreaking station in New York. In 2006, PIX11 became the flagship station of the CW Television Network, and its successful primetime programming, award winning news, extensive library of hit movies, first-run programs, off-network sitcom favorites, quality children's programming and public affairs shows, as well as outstanding event coverage, have contributed to the station's success. WPIX11 has earned nearly 250 Emmy® Awards including two for Outstanding Morning News Program and multiple Awards for Outstanding Newscast. In addition, PIX11 has been the broadcast home of the New York Mets since 1999. Responsibilities: The Director of News is responsible for directing daily news coverage by holding daily editorial meetings. Delineates what is expected of reporters and photographers in covering news stories. Communicates a code of conduct all news personnel are expected to follow in doing their jobs. Keeps spending under control without hampering the news department's ability to cover the news. Oversee complete budgeting and P&L process for the Newsroom. Collaborate with the General Manager to develop innovative new ways to implement our station brand and execute our vision. Developed and implement strategies for special projects, including investigative series and sweeps reports, elections, town hall meetings, and live coverage of major events. Other critical responsibilities include: Critiques work of newsroom staff as often as possible. Critiques daily newscast on a daily basis. Keeps other departments heads informed of news department activities. Consults with staff and other department heads on possible news related programs that could enhance the station's image and/or bring revenue. Initiates and/or approves all news department staff action. Ensures adherence to station, corporate and governmental policies and rules, as well as legal matters relating to news programming and staff. Participate in community service activities, both as a citizen and as a spokesperson for the news department and the station. Participate in union negotiations. Remain alert to latest trends in news production and coverage both locally and nationwide. Oversees Scheduling. Reviews formats for daily news programs, making suggested changes when necessary. Utilized multiple platforms, including broadcast, web, and mobile, to deliver content and engage our viewers on a daily basis. Use state of the art newsgathering equipment including digital editing systems, graphic technologies, new control room, HD weather, traffic data system to showcase a compelling product. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications, Business Administration or equivalent experience. Along with a minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in television as a news director or 5 years of newsroom management experience in medium to large market. Candidates should possess experience in strategic project management, marketing and promotions along with experience in News, Digital, (including technology trends in the market including a social media strategy) and brand management. Ability to partner with business leaders, develop strong relationships and drive results. Superior organizational skills with an emphasis on data, reporting tools and metrics. Knowledge of budget preparation and maintenance. Experience managing teams including prioritizing, assigning and overseeing work. High attention to detail, while managing multiple projects. Prior News Director experience in Top 25 market preferred. Strong financial controls/ budget management. Strong understanding of content management, multi-platform journalism. Excellent leader and motivator with strong organizational skills. Strong communicational skills, both oral and written.
