    Washington Correspondent, WNYC News

    Full-time

The New York/New Jersey/Connecticut region has one of the largest delegations in Congress. Yet news coverage of the delegation is meager, and members’ lawmaking, fundraising and constituent service get little journalistic scrutiny. WNYC aims to bridge this gap by hiring an enterprising journalist to engage in original, deep, accountability reporting on the tri-state delegation.

The Washington Correspondent’s work will focus on issues of consequence; in identifying problems, it will also point toward solutions. The ideal candidate will have terrific reporting and storytelling skills, agility with numbers and a deep understanding of how to work a government beat to identify rich stories whose details illuminate bigger issues. He or she will demonstrate a willingness to experiment with new reporting tools and new ways of telling stories on every platform – the radio, the Web and social media – and have a track record of producing investigative stories that have made a difference. The Correspondent will have a demonstrated capacity for collaboration and a desire to work closely with WNYC’s DataNews team and other WNYC journalists to shine light on the conduct of powerful officials and the performance of the byzantine federal system.

     Responsibilities:

    • Initiating and executing vividly told, deeply reported enterprise stories (both audio and text).
    • Producing scoops
    • Appearing on WNYC newscasts and talk shows, and at live events, to present and discuss your reporting
    • Working with the Data News team on investigative news gathering, and on interactives and multimedia visualizations that advance the impact and reach of your reporting.
    • Active engagement with social media as a reporting and distribution tool
    • Covering members of the House and Senate from the tri-state region with an eye to how their conduct and public policy affect the everyday lives of the region’s citizens.
    • Additional duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of three years professional journalism experience
    • Track record of producing investigative stories with impact
    • Experience working at a distance from the organization’s main office is preferred
    • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
    • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment
    • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
    • Ability to travel regularly between Washington and the NYC area
    • Familiarity with the style of public radio journalism
