    OVERVIEW

    NYPR seeks a skilled, highly motivated Associate Producer for WNYC’s health desk. In addition to contributing health-related content to the newsroom, the health unit is launching a new weekly podcast for a national audience. The show will tell powerful stories about how health transforms our lives, whether it’s through our daily habits, a life-changing illness or a groundbreaking medical discovery.

    The Associate Producer will generate ideas and create content for the weekly podcast, radio, and website. The successful candidate will be a passionate and informed consumer of health news and issues, well-versed in cutting edge medical research, an exceptional writer, and savvy in the use of digital media. We are looking for a sharp, fresh thinker to help steer the health unit’s coverage of medicine and scientific discovery, healthcare delivery and policy, and personal health and wellness.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Contribute ideas for all aspects of the program: interview subjects and host segments, reported stories, listener engagement projects, and themed shows
    • Produce interview segments for host: research and book guests; develop thoughtful and surprising questions; use clips and other materials creatively; and edit recorded interviews
    • Write host copy and scripts
    • Produce weekly fast-turnaround segment on health topics for Morning Edition
    • Write and produce content for website and engagement projects
      • Read constantly to discover unexpected and important angles related to health and health care
      • Discover personal stories we can tell on-air that reflect larger news issues relating to health and medicine
      • Monitor other podcasts and health publications to help us constantly stay current and continuously improve in both content and storytelling techniques
    • Write superior promotional copy for internal and external use
    • Assist in managing and tracking editorial content
    • Research and conceive special projects in depth
    • Some administrative tasks as needed

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • At least five years’ experience in a fast-paced, idea-driven media environment
    • Passion for and expertise in diverse aspects of health: science and the human body, medical research, public health, healthcare policy, wellness, mental health
    • Superb writing skills showing depth, originality and personality; experience writing for broadcast strongly preferred
    • Proficiency with audio editing (preferably using ProTools)
    • Production experience with multimedia (image and/or video) preferred
    • Experience working with talent preferred
    • Experience working with freelancers in an editorial capacity preferred
    • Creative problem-solving in editing stories and interviews
    • Familiarity with HTML and content management systems
    • Scrupulous attention to detail and organizational skills
    • Excellent communication skills, written and spoken
    • Effective time-management and ability to produce excellent work on deadline
    • Ability to collaborate closely with others and thrive in a team environment
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
