The Managing Editor is the lead conductor of Upworthy’s overall editorial operational core, coordinating the work of multiple teams, from daily trending news coverage to weekly and monthly output of longer format stories and video, the Managing Editor is knowledgeable about all story formats, their work flow, and their outcomes. "Keeping the trains running on time" is the phrase most often associated with this role, but at Upworthy this role might also ask that you pitch in and write, think through a social strategy or oversee a video brainstorm.

This role will be at the center of the Upworthy creative operations, working with every editorial team — from our writers and video producers to our standards and social media teams. You will expertly manage the rhythm of the creative output at Upworthy and guide our overall operational practices on a day-to-day basis. Unique in its breadth, this role is 80% pragmatic operational decision-making and 20% jack-of-all trades, start-up creativity.

The Ideal Candidate…

• Has 5-10 years of experience in digital journalism or nonfiction storytelling. Has proven experience working in different mediums including text, images, videos, and social media. Understands the best-in-class digital practices for original storytelling, community engagement, distribution, and social media.
• Is a clear and effective communicator and self-starter. Upworthy is a distributed office, so you must be able to work remotely and communicate well both in groups and independently.
• Is knowledgeable about video production — understands the workflow, resource requirements, and tradeoffs needed to make excellent, high-quality video stories built for social media.
• Collaborates well in a team environment, is sensitive to others’ needs, and can develop warm and trusting relationships, even remotely.
• Is fast and experimental but knows when to stop the presses to get it right.
• Has a portfolio of work that will make us really excited to work with you.
• Is a straightforward, empathetic, and considerate team manager.
