Come join one of the fastest growing and most ambitious investigative reporting desks in the world. We are looking for a player coach, someone who can excel in two arenas: carry out your own world-class investigative projects and work with other investigation editors to help shape, edit, and present investigative stories by other members of our investigations staff.

Candidates must have themselves landed major investigative projects that held people or institutions accountable. And they must be hungry to land the most explosive stories of their career.

Experience editing narrative and complex stories is highly valuable. For the right candidate, we would also consider someone who has so far worked only as a reporter but who has the expansive vision, steady hand, and generosity of spirit that great editing requires.

In all cases, a candidate’s writing must be incandescent. Equally, the person must have a gift for conceptualizing stories and making them hit with maximum velocity and impact. Openness to thinking about packaging and promotion also helps.

Successful candidates must:

• Report like a pit bull, write like an angel
  
• Bulletproof an investigative story so that aggressive lawyers hoping to sue for libel will slump in despair
  
• Leap into breaking news to help reporters find and shape rolling features and investigations that hit hard and advance the story
  
• Inspire, strategize with, and edit some of the the most talented investigative journalists to be found anywhere
  
• Play well with others, including editors of other sections and our international newsrooms
  
• Help create new kinds of investigative projects and forms for the social web.

This person will report to the investigative editor, Mark Schoofs, and will work with closely with other editors. This person can be based in New York; Los Angeles; Washington, DC; or San Francisco.
