To apply for this position please submit your materials via this form

The California Sunday Magazine is offering a full-time editorial assistant position for creative and talented people at the beginning of their careers. You’ll take part in all aspects of the magazine-making process. You’ll participate in story-brainstorming meetings with senior editorial and art staff. You’ll work directly with prominent and emerging writers and learn how to fact-check stories, a process that involves rigorous original reporting. You’ll also learn journalistic research methods, from scouring databases to filing public-records requests. You may get the opportunity to report and write stories of your own. And you’ll be responsible for administrative duties, like responding to research requests, maintaining a database of story pitches, sending mail, helping out at live events, and assisting senior editors and the editor in chief.

Candidates should be organized and confident managing multiple projects at a time. Attention to detail is important. You should be pursuing writing or editing as a profession and have some experience working in a deadline-oriented environment, such as at a university publication or local media outlet, or podcasting or blogging. Traditional experience—for instance, an internship at a media company or a journalism-school degree—is not necessary.

In all our work, diversity is really important to us.

Just a year and a half old, California Sunday has been a finalist for three National Magazine Awards and a winner in 2016. We also produce the acclaimed live-event series Pop-Up Magazine, which presents new, mostly reported stories by writers, radio producers, photographers, and documentary filmmakers at large venues across the country—and there are opportunities for California Sunday staff to contribute.

Editorial assistants receive a salary, health insurance, and equity in Pop-Up Magazine Productions, the publisher of California Sunday.

PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR COVER LETTER: PART 1) A letter introducing yourself, stating the specific reason or reasons that you are interested in a job at California Sunday, and outlining your qualifications. PART 2) Two story ideas. Please be sure these are stories and not topics. PART 3) A critique of California Sunday. What do you think we do well and what do you think we could do better? Your critique should be 500-800 words.
