    Jonathan Schober

    Sarah Sandbach

    Location

    Description

    Overview:

WNYC Studios seeks an innovative sound designer to create surprising and delightful listening experiences for podcasts and pilot projects in the WNYC Studios’ expanding portfolio of digital programming. You’ll play a critical role in defining the sound, style and identity of some of our new on-demand shows as well as the digital podcasts we pilot and launch in the coming years. We need someone with strong editorial judgment and a technical mastery of recording, editing and mixing. Our department is extremely collaborative and works on various projects at once--you might be developing the sound and tone of a pilot project one day and doing a final mix of a podcast already in production the next. If you want consistency and the security of one show with predictable deadlines, this isn’t the job for you. If your interests are wide ranging, you thrive on variety and you enjoy everything from scoring to final QC work, than this might be the job for you.

Please note, there are two openings for this role.

    Responsibilities:

    •     Operate a control room/production booth and give direction on pre-production and post-production engineering and mixing
    •     Engineer interviews and recordings (in-studio and in the field)
    •     Edit interviews and host continuity
    •     Assemble and mix segments and promos
    •     Sound design, mix and master
    •     Select music for transitions and scoring throughout the show
    •     Create original sonic stamps for the show, branding series and projects
    •     Manage digital delivery of show via distribution systems (DAVID, Content Depot, etc.)
    •     Manage equipment inventory; serve as technical liaison with NYPR engineering
    •     Maintain and manage audio archive for the show
    •     Ability to work extended hours as needed, including some evenings and weekends, and to be on-call for emergencies is a requirement
    •     Comply with all NYPR and department policies and guidelines

    Qualifications:

    •     Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
    •     Minimum five years professional audio production required
    •     ProTools expert; mastery of audio editing
    •     A great ear and creativity with sound design; musical background a plus
    •     Field and studio recording experience required; knowledge of a wide range of microphones and recording equipment; experience with recording live music strongly preferred
    •     Experience with video editing a plus
    •     Experience -- and pleasure -- in with working with a team of people
    •     Excellent attention to detail in all aspects of engineering, post-production and digital distribution
    •     Effective time management and ability to work quickly under deadline
    •     Excellent communication skills—both oral and written
    •     Experience working on a radio program or podcast preferred
