    Front-End Javascript Engineer

    Position Type

    New York Public Radio seeks a front-end developer with proven JavaScript skills, an interest in design and UI and a passion for public media, new technology, and the creation of digital experiences that leverage the power of great audio programming, journalism and conversation to engage and delight audiences.

    You will build web and mobile platforms that integrate journalism, culture and media contributed by local and national shows, reporters and a dedicated participatory community. You will work as part of an agile team to support WNYC, the nation’s largest public radio station, as well as WQXR and such national shows as Radiolab, Freakonomics Radio, The New Yorker Radio Hour, On the Media and Death, Sex and Money. 

     Responsibilities
    • Collaborate with designers and other developers to produce interfaces for our web and mobile apps.
    • Implement application and display logic using JavaScript, SASS/CSS and markup.
    • Proactively refactor your code for maintainability and readability and ensure your contributions integrate with the rest of the codebase.
    • Maintain working knowledge of the entire application.
    • Contribute to technical discussions regarding new features and roadmap milestones.
    • Assist with ongoing development, analysis and strategy to improve web services at NYPR.
    • Evaluate and leverage JavaScript libraries for integration into NYPR's diverse needs in media, participation and data-visualization.
    • Write and maintain technical documentation on applications, processes and workflow
    • Engage with the tech community via meetups and/or open-source projects
    • Maintain awareness of industry trends in technology, public broadcasting and media. This includes design, content, community, user interfaces and information architecture.

     

    Qualifications

    • Three years professional experience in software development
    • 1-2 years professional experience with EmberJS
    • Excellent knowledge of CSS, including pseudo-elements and flexbox, as well as other recent implementations of the CSS3 spec
    • Familiarity with cross-browser inconsistencies
    • Advanced browser debugging skills
    • Excellent object-oriented JavaScript programming skills
    • Attention to detail required
    • HTML5, XML, HTML, CSS, JSON fluency
    • Proficiency with server-side and client-side templating languages
    • Familiarity with version control systems like bazaar, hg, or git
    • Knowledge of modern browser features including fetch, Promises, and ES6 functionality
    • Ability to perform cross-browser testing and debugging
    • Ability to work on multiple, simultaneous projects
    • Experience proactively communicating with other team-members and sharing knowledge and experience diplomatically
    • Ability and eagerness to teach yourself new skills with minimal hand-holding
    • Proven ability to meet deadlines with acute attention to detail and to work on several projects concurrently
    • Open-source project participation
    • A public github/gitorious/launchpad/etc portfolio
    • Django/Python/back-end experience a plus
    • Comfortable with the command line and unix tools like curl, grep, and sed a plus
