    Position Overview

    The General Assignment Reporter will be a key member of an expanding public radio newsroom. The reporter will be tasked with developing original reporting, responding to breaking news and monitoring ongoing stories for developments. This position will be a Sunday - Thursday job, primarily working in the late afternoon / evenings in order to file newscasts material for All Things Considered, Morning Edition and the web. 

    This person must be able to balance several stories simultaneously, react to breaking news and quickly file for newscast, as well as adapt to feature reporting when needed. 

    The candidate must be able to generate story ideas on his/her own and be a passionate, curious and informed consumer of issues and topics relevant to Massachusetts. The ideal candidate will have experience with radio reporting including live reporting and producing. They should be an exceptional writer, understand how to find and tell a good radio story, a savvy user of digital media and have the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure. 

    They will have at least five years experience in radio, television or print reporting, and will understand the NPR style and demonstrate strong production experience and comfort with using a variety of audio editing software. The candidate must have a strong understanding of principles of journalism and have a proven ability to present balanced reporting, fairness and fidelity to facts. 

    The General Assignment Reporter will report to the Managing Editor of Radio and work closely with the Assignment Editor. 

    Responsibilities include: 

    • Identify stories and generate, write and execute voicers, wraps and scripts for newscast. 
    • Adapt to longer feature reporting when needed. 
    • Gather, cut and edit audio 
    • Knowledge of desktop audio editing 
    • React to breaking news and monitor ongoing stories for developments 
    • Write original stories for the web and assist with social media 
    • Occasionally fill-in as a host during the day or on special events at night is desirable, but not required 
    • Other tasks as needed

    Skills Required

    Must have at least 5 years of radio, television or print/digital journalism experience, preferably on public broadcasting. Must be a self-starter and able to work collaboratively with a small staff. 
    This position requires a strong writing and digital editing skills and the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure.
