The Seattle Times is seeking an experienced Reporter to join Project Homelessthe newspaper’s award-winning, grant-funded journalism project aimed at enriching the public dialogue around the region’s homeless crisis. That mission is aimed at reporting enterprise and daily stories, including those that focus on potential solutions to homelessness, in order to educate citizens and decision-makers about the crisis. You will be part of a four-person, collaborative team (one editor, two reporters and one engagement editor) dedicated to the issue, together producing hard-hitting watchdog and investigative stories, solutions stories, narrative stories, daily coverage, graphic layouts and multimedia features aimed at informing and engaging readers in a region trying to solve a growing homelessness problem.

You should have proven experience finding and writing compelling, in-depth stories. Strong investigative skills and experience analyzing policy, finances and other data are key. Multimedia skills and knowledge of homelessness issues are pluses. Candidates also should demonstrate an ability to meet deadlines; write quick breaking stories as well as longer, more complicated articles in a variety of genres; deliver clean, error-free writing that is fair and well-researched; and use social media and other technology tools to expand contacts, establish visibility and cover news. We are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive newsroom and encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply.

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare accurate, fair, balanced and carefully researched stories and multimedia posts to meet assigned deadlines.
    • Seek a variety of sources in covering a story. Seek out and act quickly on story opportunities on all platforms.
    • Aggressively follow through on stories, including interacting with readers after publication through chats, comments or other engagement tools.
    • Handle a variety of stories and writing approaches. Write with authority based on a clear understanding of a topic or beat.
    • Develop sources on continuing stories.
    • Produce enterprise stories and stay ahead of stories by anticipating or uncovering developments.
    • Consistently suggest ideas for stories, photographs, video, interactive elements and illustrations.
    • Use documents effectively and link to source documents from stories.
    • Know and effectively use library and internal databases. Seek fresh ideas and approaches in reporting and writing.
    • Seek diversity in coverage.
    • Be willing to take leadership of a story or project.
