    Job Summary

    The Philadelphia Inquirer, winner of 20 Pulitzer Prizes and home to an innovative newsroom, is looking for a Page One editor. This editor communicates with team leaders, hub editors (including homepage, audience and visuals editors), designers and coverage editors to select and curate content for print sections, choosing the most important and compelling stories, photos, and graphics for the front page. The Page One editor also lays out the first section of the paper and oversees night print production.

    What You’ll Do

    • Determine what stories are available for print based on discussions with editors and online and print budgets

    • Make sound news decisions and judgments, reflected in the selection and placement of stories, photos and graphics

    • Lay out print sections and pages, creating compelling layouts while maximizing use of space, headlines and visual elements

    • Interact with reporters and other editors during the editing process

    • Place a premium on ensuring The Inquirer content is fair, accurate and thorough

    • Meet all production deadlines on a consistent basis

    Who We’re Looking For

    • Proficient in print and digital content management tools, e.g., WordPress, Arc and Hermes)

    • Strong news judgment, communication and collaboration skills

    • Experience in both digital and print journalism, with an understanding of what content works across platforms

    • Fundamental editing, coaching and collaborative skills

    • Skills in brainstorming, planning and coordinating multimedia storytelling

    • Familiarity with social media (Twitter, Facebook)

    • Basic skills in analytics (Parse.ly)

    • Knowledge in building a digital story with links, tags, SEO and posting directly to the website

    • Basic knowledge of what works in multimedia storytelling and editing for the web

    • Basic graphics building and numeracy skills

    • Basic Excel skills

    • Basic audio and video skills

    • Skills in headline writing for digital audience
