Harper’s Magazine is looking for two assistant editors.
One assistant editor will serve as the copy-editor for the magazine. Responsibilities will include copy-editing each piece in the magazine to ensure its compliance with the dictionary and internal style guides, working with the managing editor and art staff on production (using InDesign), and helping supervise freelance typesetters and proofreaders. The ideal candidate will be a meticulous, rigorous editor with an ear for language, a collaborative spirit, and an interest in and appreciation for the work of Harper’s Magazine. Experience with software tools such as InDesign will be a plus.
The other assistant editor will join the magazine as a fact-checker, responsible for ensuring the accuracy and correctness of various articles and sections each month, which may include conducting primary research or additional reporting as needed. The assistant editor may have to supervise stringers or freelancers. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, tenacious researcher who is attentive to detail, proactive, and diplomatic in dealing with writers, sources, and other editors.
Founded in 1850, Harper’s is the oldest general-interest monthly in the United States. Among many journalistic and literary honors, we have received nineteen National Magazine Awards, and our contributors make regular appearances in Best American anthologies and in the media. We publish essays, reportage, memoirs, fiction, criticism, and (especially) hybrids of the foregoing. Even in polemical pieces, narrative is the ultimate engine, and Harper’s remains committed to the density and spaciousness of the long form. We have always published the most distinguished writers of the era: a casual trawl through the archive will reveal pieces by Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, James Baldwin, Annie Dillard, David Foster Wallace, Barbara Ehrenreich, Jonathan Franzen, and many more. We are, however, equally devoted to discovering and nurturing new talent.
Both positions are full-time, based in New York City. Salary will depend on experience, and the benefits package includes a generous health insurance plan. Harper’s is an Equal Opportunity Employer and we are committed to diversity in the workplace. To apply, please send a cover letter, a résumé, and a writing sample of no more than 5,000 words to Hasan Altaf at firstname.lastname@example.org, specifying which position you are interested in. No phone calls, please.
Applications will be accepted until January 31, 2018.
